Note: This project uses the Madeira stitches featured in “Sewing for Baby,” CN March/April ’08. For complete stitch instructions, refer to The Art of Madeira Embroidery by Lillie McAnge, available from Creative Needle (click here to order).

Instructions
Organdy
Trace embroidery design (click here) onto organdy. Stitch design according to embroidery legend.

Batiste
Cut a piece of batiste 9" x 13". Place it over pattern (click here) and trace “frame” lines to be pinstitched.

Materials

  • One 18" x 22" piece of organdy
  • One 9" x 45" piece of batiste
  • DMC Floche: 368 (light pistachio green), 369 (very light pistachio green), 745 (light pale yellow), 800 (pale delft blue), 818 (baby pink), 3326 (light rose)
  • Needles: #8 between (pinstitching), #10 embroidery (embroidery stitches)
  • Lightweight sewing thread
  • Two 1/2" buttons
  • Pillow top pattern (click here)
  • Embroidery design (click here)

Note: The pillow top pattern is too large to fit on one page of letter-sized paper. After downloading the pattern, piece the pages together to form a complete pattern. Embroidery design needs to be printed on legal-sized paper. The embroidery design is also provided on the pattern if you prefer to piece it on letter-sized paper.

Baste batiste to organdy on all “frame” lines. Baste again inside “frame” lines.

On batiste only, cut 1/8" seam allowance outside “frame” lines, exposing embroidery on organdy. Turn under batiste on basted seamlines as you remove the basting threads.

Pinstitch batiste to organdy.

Work the closed blanket-buttonhole stitch along drawn lines for edge of pillow top. Do not cut organdy at this point.

Pillowcase
To make a pillowcase for pillow top, cut a piece of the batiste 9" x 28".

Fold back a 1" double hem on both short ends of the fabric. Press. Slipstitch the hem.

Fold the fabric in half (with hemmed ends together) and make French seams on each long side, leaving hemmed ends open. To make French seams, place wrong sides together and make a 1/4" seam. Trim. Press. Fold right sides together and sew a 1/4" seam. Press.

Make two buttonholes on one hemmed end of case and sew two buttons on other side.

Slipstitch the pillowcase to wrong side of pillow top. Align case to pinstitched areas. Stitch only one layer at hemmed edge of the pillow to pillow top.

Wash and press pillow top. Trim away fabric from scalloped closed blanket-buttonhole stitches.

Five Granito Bastido
Five Petal Granito

1. Begin with center granito.

2. Work each granito in the 12:00 position.

3. Rotate the fabric counterclockwise to the 12:00 position and work granitos in Steps 4, 5 and 6.

4. Before beginning each granito in the five petal design, aim needle between granitos to ensure correct stitching position.
