Hen & Chicks Kitchen Towels

Add rickrack and embroidered details to 
purchased towels giving a sunny
 look to
any kitchen.

Materials

Hen or chick design
Mini rickrack in yellow and brown*
Medium rickrack in green
DMC floss 946 (orange), 3781 (brown), 666 (red), 437 (light brown), 310 (black), and 910 (green)
#7 embroidery needle
Purchased towels
Fray Check
Pencil or water soluble marker for transferring design
*Note: If brown rickrack is unavailable, choose another color or dye rickrack to desired color.


Instructions
Transfer design to towel, using a pencil or water soluble marker. Pin rickrack in place along design, leaving enough rickrack at ends to fold under, with folded ends meeting at starting point. Fray Check ends of rickrack and allow to dry. With matching thread, stitch rickrack around design. 

Stitch green medium rickrack along edge of towel, using Fray Check before stitching.

Yellow chicks: For chick with its head down (Chick B), stitch top portion of head, then complete lower portion of head and body. Add embroidery details, using 2 strands of 946 


(orange) for feet and beak. Feet are 
backstitched, and beaks are straight stitches. Eye is a 2-wrap French knot stitched with 3781 (brown.)

Brown hen:
Using 2 strands of 3871 (brown) floss, stitch 2-wrap French knots as shown. Wing and head are backstitched using 2 strands of 3781 (brown) for wing and two strands of 666 (red) for head.

Stitch 2-wrap French knots for corn, using 2 strands of 437 (light brown). Stitch straight stitches with 2 strands of 910 (green) for grass.
