"Shoulder Button Bishop" a classic pattern available from Creative Needle, is fashioned from airy Swiss nelona. Cheryl Lohmann's original smock design, for both front and sleeve smocking, are included

Spaces are left between smocking rows for ease in reading the diagram.
Actual smocking rows should touch.

Instructions

This design requires six rows. Pleat eight rows. Use three strands of floss unless otherwise indicated for smocking. Use two strands of floss to work bullion stitches.

1. Find the center two pleats on Row 1. Using DMC blue (3841) floss, begin with an up cable and cable across right side of panel. Turn upside down and cable across to complete the left side.

2. Find center two pleats on Row 2. With blue floss, begin with a down cable and cable across the right side of panel. Turn panel upside down and cable across to complete the left side. Just below cabled Row 2, using lt. green floss, work series of three cable stitches across panel, skipping two pleats between each group. (See diagram for exact placement.) Using lt. pink, work two bullion stitches wrapped four times each, centered just below each group of green cable stitches.

3. Find center valley on Row 6. Begin with an up cable and cable six; * trellis up two to Row 5 1/2; cable one; trellis two back down to Row 6; cable three; trellis two back up to Row 5 1/2; cable one; trellis two back down to Row 6; cable eleven. Repeat design from* across right side of panel. Turn panel upside down and cable five; * trellis two down to Row 5 1/2; cable one; trellis two back up to Row 6; cable three; trellis two down to Row 5 1/2; cable one; trellis two back up to Row 6; cable eleven. Repeat design from * across to complete the left side.

4. Count eight pleats right from the center valley on Row 5 1/2. Begin with a down cable (just above up cable stitch previously stitched) and cable one; trellis two up to Row 5; cable three; trellis two back down to Row 5 1/2; cable one (just above up cable stitch
previously stitched). Repeat this design across entire panel, skipping fourteen pleats between each design repeat.

5. Find center valley on Row 5 1/2. Begin with an up cable and cable six; *trellis five up to Row 4 1/2; cable three; trellis five back down to Row 5 1/2; cable eleven. Repeat design from * across right side of the panel. Turn panel upside down and cable five; * trellis five down to Row 4 1/2; cable three; trellis five back up to Row 5 1/2; cable eleven. Repeat this design from * across to complete the left side.

6. Between Row 3 1/2 and 4, using two strands of 504 (lt. green) floss, work outline stitches: six stitches up; six stitches across; six stitches down, and then six stitches across. Repeat this design across panel to form the vine. (To center the vine, find center two pleats on Row 3 1/2 and work three outline stitches across and continue design repeat as directions given above.) The thread always stays above or over the needle when stitching.

7. On Row 5 1/2, work bullion roses as shown on diagram. The center bullion stitch is worked in 3713 (pink) floss wrapped ten times. The outer bullions are worked in 819 (lt. pink) floss, wrapped eight times each. Using two strands of 3817 (green) floss, work one lazy daisy stitch on each side of the bullion rose as shown.

8. Using white floss, work four bullion stitches wrapped eleven times each to form each flower along the vine. (See diagram for placement.) Using three strands of 745 (yellow) floss, work one French knot wrapped one time to form the center for each white flower. Using two strands of 3817 (green) floss, work lazy daisy leaves along the vine as shown.

Backsmocking: Using two strands of floss, backsmock across Rows 3, 4, and 5.

Sleeve Smock Graph

Smocked Sleeves

For the smocked sleeve version, pleat three rows for each sleeve.

1. Find the center valley just above Row 2. Begin with an up cable and cable across right side of sleeve. Turn upside down and cable across to complete the left side. Find center valley just below Row 2 and begin with a down cable and cable across right side of the sleeve. Then again, turn sleeve upside down and complete the left side.

2. Find center valley above upper row of cable stitches on Row 2. Begin with an up cable and cable three; trellis one down to just below bottom row of cable stitches on Row 2; cable three; trellis one back up to just above cabled Row 2; repeat design across. Turn panel and repeat same design to complete left side of panel. Be sure not to pull floss too tight when working trellis stitches; this creates a ladder-type stitch to weave ribbon
through. With 819 (lt. pink), work two bullion stitches (see step 7).
