On "Lauren's Pocket Pants" the pockets steal the show. They're big, they're fun, and they're extremely versatile.

"Lauren's Pocket Pants" available from Creative Needle is shown smocked and with a plain bodice. Smock plate is an adaptation of "Haleigh" from Classic Smocking (available from Creative Needle). Both blouses are "Amy" by Children's Corner. Featherwale corduroy, pinpoint oxford, Liberty print and gingham are all available from La-Di-Da Fine Fabrics. 

Banded pocket with piped ruffle: For all sizes cut 2 pieces of pants fabric 3" wide by 10 1/2" long. Press each piece in half longways, wrong sides together. To make ruffle, cut a 16" x 2 " contrasting fabric strip on the straight of grain. Press in half longways. run 2 rows of lengthened machine stitching. Gather to fit band. Baste piping to long side of band. Place gathered ruffle on top of piping and baste.

Along one 10 1/2" side, baste piped ruffle to band, right sides together. Press under 1/2" on other long side. Trim 1/2" from top of lower pants side piece and pocket lining piece. With wrong sides together, baste lower pants side and pocket lining together. Run two rows of gathering stitches across top of lower pants/pocket lining piece. Gather to fit 10 1/2" side of band. Stitch right sides together. Press seam toward band. Fold band to wrong side along pressed line and slipstitch to wrong side. Continue with pattern instructions.


Banded pocket with ruffle


Piped pocket with button: Stitch piping to seamline on right side along top edge of lower pants side pattern piece. With right sides together, stitch top edge of pocket lining to top edge of lower pants side. Trim seam allowance to 1/4" and clip curved area. Press seam allowance toward pocket lining. Fold wrong sides together and press seam. Make a buttonhole at the center of the pocket top, about 1/2" from edge. Buttons should match buttons used on shoulder strap. 
Sew button in place to upper pants side after stitching upper pants side to pocket lining.
The sage green 
corduroy pants are further enhanced with contrasting lining for the bodice
that matches the ruffle. Note the piping on the pocket ruffle is bias gingham.
The bodice on the blue pants is also lined to match the pocket lining. The
smocked insert, the bodice front and back and the pockets are all piped in bias 
gingham.
