bonnethead
bonnet

We've seen many versions of this charming combination of a bride's wedding handkerchief and a baby's christening bonnet. This one, a clever design from Verna Magyar Bunch, is unique! No further sewing is required by the lucky recipient to transform the delicate square from handkerchief to bonnet and back again. What a thoughtful little gift for every bride and new mother!

Stitch the handkerchief, working hemstitching by hand or machine. Add beading and edging in white or your choice of color. Thread the ribbon through beading and the handkerchief is ready to gently wipe away a bride's tears of joy.

When presenting this gift, be sure to include instructions on making this wedding keepsake into an heirloom bonnet, or for returning the bonnet to its original handkerchief form.

Materials

10" square of Swiss batiste
56" French lace beading, 1/2" wide
56" French lace edging, 1/2" to 5/8" wide
2 yds. 1/8" ribbon
Water soluble stabilizer, such as Solvy
Wing needle

Instructions

Pull threads to mark fabric grain. Cut a 10" square of Swiss batiste. Roll and whip all four edges of the square.

Join lace edging to lace beading to form one 56" strip. Place edges side by side, without overlapping, and join with a tiny zigzag stitch. Cut this edging/beading strip into four equal lengths.

Attach four sections of edging/beading to the edges of the batiste square, mitering corners and press.

Stabilize batiste with water soluble stabilizer. Using wing needle, hemstitch by machine between edging/beading and fabric. Hand wash to remove stabilizer, and press.

Bride's Handkerchief

Run 1/8" ribbon through beading, beginning in one corner and working ribbon all around to same corner. Tie ends.

Baby's Bonnet

To form the bonnet brim:With right sides together, fold front edge of handkerchief back approximately 21/2" (fabric measurement not including edging). Then fold lace edge forward, extending edging/beading past folded edge. Adjust fold to match beading holes. Press.

Beginning at one edge, weave ribbon through all layers of beading, leaving brim free. Gently pull up ribbons to form a tiny bonnet.
