8" x 4" rectangle of organdy
One 1" StyrofoamŪ ball

Note: Avoid blue markers, since the combination of starch and steam may cause the blue dye to wick into fabric.
The iron may heat-set the blue line which may show through the stitching. |
Seam sealant
Spray starch
One clip-type clothes pin |
|
| Set tension for machine embroidery for all stitching. |
| Instructions |
| 1. Spray starch and press each piece of organdy two or three times. A very stiff piece of fabric is needed, since no stabilizers are being used. |
| 2. Insert 80/12 needle in machine and thread with rayon thread on top and lightweight thread in the bobbin.
Select an elongated scallop stitch, or similar stitch on your machine, and test stitch to determine what adjustments are needed. |
| 3. Find center of fabric square and mark it with a pin. Draw a circle 10" in diameter. Sew scallop stitch along this line. |
| 4. Change to wing needle. |
| 5. Mark a circle 3/4" inside stitched scallop and stitch a star shape or other decorative stitch of your choice along this line. |
| 6. Change to 80/12 needle. Mark a circle 3/4" inside star shape.
If your machine is programmable, select and program a scroll/heart repeat pattern. Stitch around. |
| Note: The piece probably looks a bit buckled and drawn up; it will flatten once it is pressed and starched again. |
| 7. Spray starch and press. Run a bead of seam sealant along bottom of scallops on wrong side of fabric to prevent clipped threads from unraveling.
Do not omit this step. Let dry and carefully trim excess fabric away along scallops. |
| Wings |
| Use needle-down option to help maneuver curves and pivots. |
| 1. Draw wings on 8" x 2" organdy rectangle. |
| 2. With 80/12 needle, select a satin stitch (length .02, width 4.4).
Stitch around on drawn line. (Note: For best results, begin stitching on bottom of wings, rather than at a corner.) |
| 3. With wing needle, repeat stitch on inner circle of angel body, reducing stitch slightly in width and length.
Starting at bottom of wing, stitch around, approximately 3/8" inside satin stitch, pivoting around curves and points. |
| 4. Spray starch and press again. Run a bead of seam sealant along satin stitching on wrong side and allow to dry. Carefully trim away excess fabric. |
| Assembling Angel |
| 1. Tie the 12" length of ribbon around center of wings, with knot at the front (right side).
Center Styrofoam® ball on wrong side of fabric circle. Gather fabric under ball at neck and hold in place. |
| 2. Place angel on wings, which are right side up. Bring ribbon around neck and tie into a knot.
Bring ribbon to back, slipping under wings, and tie again. Arrange folds of skirt so angel will stand. |
| 3. With the 4" length of pearls, make a loop, and glue where ends intersect.
Secure with a clothes pin until dry. Trim away tails of loop and glue pearl halo onto angel's head. |
